What does the new Acolyte series have in common with The Empire Strikes back? What ties the new Fallout TV-show to the games that was a huge succes years ago? How does the Black Panther and Spiderman films stay connected to the first Thor film and how does the rest of Marvel Cinematic Universe fit together? The answer is storyworlds!
A storyworld is a carefully designed universe, within certain characters, physical spaces, values, religions and interconnections exist. Establishing a strong storyworld is a key element for every story being told afterwards. Having a storyworld where everything is decided with intention, allows you to pick and choose the stories you want to tell across time and space, and the audience will still know exactly what universe this story is coming from.
In an extremely dynamic world as the one we have today, being able to create storyworlds becomes more and more important. A storyworld can be used across medias, platforms, target audience groups, and with different desired outcomes. Even elements like cross media (where stories told on different medias, e.g., a digital game and a film have cross overs that you only know about if you are familiar with the stories told on both medias) are much easier to create and incorporate, when your storyworld is well designed.
First, we talk about what a storyworld is, e.g., the strengths of it and the ways of scaling it.
We also talk about how medias and platforms work today. What is crossmedia, transmedia, virtuel productions, and why is this relevant to know?
We look into existing storyworlds and break some of them down.
Further, we dive into the elements of building a storyworld, and will focus especially on the storyworld star.
Afterwards, you will get time to work on your own storyworld, using the storyworld star, and we will go through ideas, road blocks, edgy inputs and more together.
We will end the workshop with pizza and a light talk about the workshop and perhaps hear your plans of how to use storyworlds in the future.
This workshop is for everyone! There are no requirements for participating.
Wether you're enrolled in a games or interaction design programme, have a dream of writing a fantasy novel once, or just have a curiosity for fictional worlds, you are more than welcome to join and you will fit right in.
Location: TBA (will be at ITU)
Time: 16:00-18:00
Snacks and drinks will be served during the workshop, and we will end the evening with pizza.
Discover how to unlock your creative potential and inspire a more imaginative approach to everything you do in your daily life.
How do you create a storyworld, that can be used to tell many different stories, works across different medias and platforms, and is scalable? After looking at examples of existing storyworlds, we start building our own.
